Elizabeth Felicella

“I’m interested in places and buildings over time—the photographs that mean most to me manage to use the lens of the present to reveal layers of the past and hint at possible futures.”

Elizabeth Felicella photographs architecture and landscape with particular interests in public space and preservation. She works on assignment and on long-term projects which include a catalog of New York City’s branch libraries, a survey of the city’s shoreline, and an atlas of the periphery of Kennedy Airport. Her commissioned work appears regularly in the national and international design press.

She studied photography at Bard College and began graduate work in German literature. In 1994, she received a Fulbright scholarship to study sculpture in Berlin. Inspired by the architecture and planning debates after German reunification, she turned to architectural photography as the synthesis of her interdisciplinary background—an approach that still marks her work. In 2013, she was the Brooklyn Library’s first artist-in-residence where she worked closely with the Brooklyn Collection and its photographic holdings. Her work has received support from the Design Trust for Public Space, the Graham Foundation and twice from the New York State Council for the Arts.
